Another Wrong-Way Crash in Westchester County

Written by: Abby Lundstrom

On January 28, 2021, while driving three Ardsley high school students home from a basketball game, a 57-year-old driver was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 287. The crash occurred near the border between Harrison and White Plains at around 8:30 p.m., shutting down the highway in both directions.

Tragically, the driver and one of his young passengers were killed. The two other teens were seriously injured and transported to Westchester Medical Center. The negligent driver was also taken to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The Ardsley community is mourning this horrible loss and horrific accident.

Wrong-Way Accident Statistics

A National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) report studying the number of wrong-way accidents found that in a five-year period, there were 1,566 wrong-way fatal crashes on divided highways in the U.S.

The report summarized that “although they are relatively rare highway occurrences, wrong-way collisions tend to be severe events resulting in fatalities, and the number of fatalities, averaging over 300 per year, has remained essentially unchanged in recent years.”

Why Do Wrong-Way Accidents Happen?

There are multiple causes for wrong way driving, including:

  • Poor road signage
  • Driving while impaired
  • Poor vision

While the cause of the Ardsley accident is still unknown, the outcome of the investigation will help to ensure that those responsible for this awful event are ultimately held liable for the devastating losses sustained by the families involved.
