Ending the Summer with Safety

Written by: Abby Lundstrom

Labor Day weekend was the unofficial end of lazy, summer days and the start of the hustle and bustle of the new school year.  Enjoying this last summer weekend is easy here in the Hudson Valley. Whether you go to one of the local fields to pick your own sunflowers, to one of the many farms to harvest the last of summer’s bounties of fruits and vegetables, enjoy one last swim in one of Westchester County’s many pools, (they officially closed on Monday, September 6), or attend that last summer barbeque, there are many end-of-summer events that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

As such, Labor Day also marks one of the busiest travel times of the year, and unfortunately, one of the deadliest holiday weekends when it comes to motor vehicle accidents. Only Memorial Day and Independence Day have more traffic accidents.  With over a million cars on the road, approximately 400-580 people die on U.S. roadways during Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the National Safety Council’s (NSC) estimates.

When driving during a holiday weekend or after any party, NSC recommends the following safety tips:

  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Seat belts for all
  • Properly restrain children
  • Avoid driving drowsy
  • Don’t text and drive
  • Monitor teen drivers
  • Know your vehicle
  • Check for recalls on your motor vehicle

With these eight tips in mind, please say “goodbye” to summer safely and say “hello” to fall.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are also on the list of most dangerous holidays to drive during, so don’t forget to take precautions for those upcoming autumn events.
