Parking Lot Injuries

Written by: Abby Lundstrom

Are Parking Lots Dangerous?

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), “tens of thousands of crashes occur in parking lots and garage structures annually, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries.”  Who would have thought that parking lots were that dangerous?

In a recent NSC poll, 66% of drivers say that they make telephone calls, answer texts, use social media, receive, or send emails, and take or watch videos while driving.  No wonder so many accidents occur.

Holiday Season Accidents

And during any holiday season, drivers are more likely to be distracted when going from place to place to shop, fighting for parking spaces and when dodging the increase in pedestrian traffic. Anyone who has shopped at The Westchester or The Galleria in White Plains can attest to that!

How to Stay Safe

Although driving slowly through a parking lot is helpful, some additional safety tips are:

  • Stay in lanes and avoid cutting across lots.
  • Drive slowly and use directional signals.
  • Anticipate the actions of other drivers.
  • Obey stop signs and no-parking signs.
  • When backing out, be mindful of vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Watch for small children and parents with baby strollers.

The NSC report noted that most parking lot deaths occur as a result of someone backing up.  Remember to do a quick walk-around the vehicle before backing up.  Although backup cameras are a terrific tool, don’t rely solely on technology.  Look over your shoulder and use your mirrors.

Speak with an Attorney

Despite being careful, parking lot accidents can occur.  Should you ever be in an accident in a parking lot or garage, it is important that you speak to an experienced attorney to understand how to redress any injuries you may have suffered.
