Why Are May and June the Most Dangerous Months to Drive in New York?

Written by: Abby Lundstrom

Staying Safe in Warmer Months When Car Accidents Rise

During warmer months, more cars are on the road. Unfortunately, this can lead to more accidents and more traffic-related fatalities. Studies show that May and June are two of the most dangerous months to drive in New York. Each year thousands of people are injured in car accidents during these months.

At Injured 914, our trial lawyers work tirelessly to bring justice to those injured in car accidents in White Plains and throughout Westchester County. We know the long-term, devastating impact that a wreck can have on a family, which is why we fight for our clients to receive the largest recovery possible. If you have been injured in an accident, contact our office at (914) 368-7168 for a free consultation.

Deadly Statistics

After months of bitter cold and harsh weather, the milder temperatures of May and June bring more New Yorkers out of their houses. Whether traveling by car, riding their bikes, or walking, more people are out on or near the roads. More people on the streets makes it more dangerous and increases the risk of injury or death.

Summer months are particularly dangerous for young drivers. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is often referred to as the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers. Across the country, over 7,000 people were injured in “teen driving-related summertime crashes” over a nine-year period (2010 to 2019). In nearly 30% of those accidents, speed was a factor.

Common Causes of Car Accidents

Car accidents can have one or more potential causes, but many of them are the result of negligence or inexperience. Tragically, many traffic-related injuries and deaths are preventable.

Leading causes of car accidents in New York:

  • Speeding
  • Inattention
  • Driving under the influence
  • Failure to yield
  • Failure to stop

It is important to remember that it is not your job to determine who was at fault for the accident or why the collision occurred. An attorney can help you understand your rights and guide you through the claims process. It is always recommended that you speak with an attorney before making a statement with the insurance company or accepting a settlement.

Driver Safety Tips

As noted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 9,025 fatal motor vehicle accidents from June through August 2019.

To keep your family safe during these months, NHTSA recommends:

  • Checking behind you before backing out or parking
  • Checking for recalls
  • Getting your car serviced
  • Checking your tires
  • Avoid distractions
  • Never drive impaired
  • Planning ahead
  • Don’t text and drive

By following these and other safety tips, you can ensure that you protect yourself and others throughout the summer months.
